Clemengold & Vanilla Smoothie

This might be one of the most simple things we’ve whizzed together, but by no means does that equate to it being boring. Nor will it remind you of the measly orange wedge you were given during halftime at school. Well, at least we hope not.

I’m a naartjie fanatic. I love naartjie juice, I eat what is probably too many a day and I even used to wear Naartjie Clothing (as did most 90’s kids from RSA). Wearing Naartjie while eating naartjies is definitely a national pastime. Sometimes, when I have both hands free, I remove the skin of the segment, eat it and then eat the little cells one by one. Yes, cells. That’s some pretty determined savouring.

This is none of that craziness though. This smoothie is straightforward, delicious and packs a bit of a punch in more ways than one.  We’ve added Vanilla seeds to bring out the floral flavours inherent to a naartjie, as well as a generous pinch of chilli powder for an additional immune system boost. We also never leave out our favourite Wazoogles Vanilla Sky super foods protein powder because their ingredients are incredible.

We chose ClemenGolds here for their wonderful sweetness. And easy to peel skin, to be honest. We all know vitamin C is synonymous with citrus fruits and avoiding the common cold, but did you know that it is also helpful for stress management? Vitamin C allows the body to quickly clear out cortisol, a primary stress hormone that increases sugars in the bloodstream. Although helpful in a fight or flight scenario, regularly elevated levels of cortisol in your body hinder normal functioning of the digestive system, reproductive system and growth processes. Vanilla has also been known to reduce anxiety and depression. So all in all, this smoothie is a real anti-Winter-blues Warrior.

This is the first Winter (my first being vegan) in which I’ve not caught a bug. Touch wood. I think it has a lot to do with the number of fruits and vegetables I try to cram into my Nutribullet each morning. That “max” line is just a loose guideline, right?

Recipe

Ingredients:

Serves 2

  • 2 ClemenGold Naartjies*
  • 1 Frozen Banana
  • 1 cup ClemenGold Juice (With no added sugars)
  • 1 cup Almond Milk (We use Almond Breeze)
  • 1Tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 1/2tsp Vanilla Seeds (Sub Vanilla Extract if seeds are unavailable)
  • 1/4tsp Cayenne Pepper/Chilli Powder
Instructions:
  1. Place all above ingredients in a blender, blend on high until smooth.
  2. If the smoothie is too thick, add more almond milk or clemengold juice depending if you’d like it sweeter or creamier.
  3. Split between 2 glasses and enjoy!

 


 

Notes
* A Naartjie is a type of local clementine.

If, like us, you have a heavy hand and accidentally added too much cayenne pepper, add a squeeze of lemon to take away the bite.
