For as long as I can remember, I’ve had some form of sleep “issues”.
Labelling things generally, causes me to fixate on them – so suffice to say I wasn’t getting the dream time a dizzy-dreamer by day might want at night. I sometimes remind myself of whatever the opposite of an opossum is because when I’m stressed, I do-do-do rather than play dead. Not that I want to be quite that level of comatose….
We all know a warm cup of milk before bedtime will help us sleep, but Golden Milk’s benefits far surpass just a good nights rest.Once discovering this bright yellow liquid, we became obsessed. It’s warming, so good for you and will make you drift off to dreamland in no time.
Turmeric is a golden yellow spice. It is obtained from the ginger-like rhizome of Curcuma longa, a tropical herb from India. The well-researched anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-cancer properties of turmeric make it worth including in your diet. If you are not a curry fan, turmeric milk is an excellent option.
Turmeric milk is a great tool to improve your general immunity against diseases. It is especially useful in Winter, thanks to its antiviral effect. If you’re prone to colds and flu, make a habit of having a cup of turmeric milk just before bedtime. It also improves digestion, helps relieve gas and bloating as well as heartburn resulting from gastric reflux – even more reason to have it after a comforting supper.
Scientists discovered that curcumin (the active component of turmeric) protected 72hour sleep-deprived mice from the symptoms of sleep deprivation. Treatment with curcumin extract for five days significantly prevented impairment in locomotor activity, anxiety-like effects and oxidative damage.
It has always been thought of as excellent for detoxifying and is especially helpful for our livers. Our body has to deal with an onslaught of toxins that enter the blood through food, drinks and merely breathing (yikes!). Toxins in the blood are the underlying causes of many skin conditions and other diseases. Turmeric helps the elimination of blood impurities by improving the function of the liver which is entrusted with the duty of identifying these toxins and finding a way to eliminate them. A moment of love for our livers, please.
Added to this gold dust, we add one our favourite spices – cinnamon. Along with ginger and the VERY important pinch of pepper or cayenne pepper, this sweet and spicy drink is an immune boosting powerhouse.
Say goodbye to those fence-jumping sheep for now!
